One third of the Department of Education staff works in the federal Student Aid department. This is the department that oversees student loans, grants, and other types of aid to pay for college. They process all of the applications for grants and loans from students. They issue the checks to those who are approved for them. When loans are being repaid, the staff works to make sure the process goes smoothly.

In the Higher Education Act, Title IV made financial aid available for college in the form of loans, grants, work-study programs, and scholarships. High school students with an eye on college or trade school fill out a giant form called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA form is a student’s entry into the world of financial aid. Each year about 20 million high school students submit a FAFSA when planning for college.
